Today we wish to examine a matter personal to me as I have a daughter about to turn 18 years old. I still see a little girl when I look at my daughter but society tells me she is an adult tomorrow. As a mother, I have so many emotions and thoughts affecting me right now as many of you have also experienced.

 

How in the world did we decide 18 was the age of majority? Well, we read an article on a site called Qrius.com, written by Melissa Joleene, entitled, “Why is 18 the age that people are considered adults.”

 

We found out some interesting facts I decided to share with all of you. Other facts we have herein provided were generally known to us.

 

We found the following facts to be interesting:

 

 

Alexander the Great was 16 when he conquered Mardi.

 

 

Jeanne d’Arc was 16 when she approached a garrison commander to tell him how to do his job.

 

 

Julius Caesar was 16 when he assumed control of his family and with it the Roman Empire.

 

 

Charles Algernon Parson was 15 when he invented the precursor to the modern automobile.

 

 

In California, the age of consent is 18 and that number was largely proliferated by Hollywood which made it become the legal age of consent all over the United States.

 

 

Eighteen (18) is a general age most developed counties consider someone an adult.

 

 

The age of the majority in Iran and Saudi Arabia is 15.

 

 

Cuba’s age of consent is 16, North Korea’s is 17, and it is 13 for males and 12 for females in Judaism, corresponding with when genders are believed to become reproductively mature.

 

 

The US borrowed its original age of majority from British common law, which was set at 21.

 

 

The British common law related that every person under the age of 21, whether male or female, was an infant.

 

 

It is believed the age of 21 is the age of maturity in England came from when squires were considered adults and could therefore become knights.

 

 

Prior to 1971, the voting age was still 21 but was lowered to 18 by the adoption and passage of the 26th Amendment.

 

 

The human brain doesn’t finish fully developing until close to one’s mid-20s and even potentially into the 30s.

 

 

The female brain typically finishes development two years prior to the male counterpart.

 

 

The frontal lobe, critical to our decision making particularly concerning future consequences to current actions and inhibiting impulses, isn’t finished developing until many years after pretty much every culture in the world considers you an adult.

 

Now, be honest, how many of you knew even half of these riveting facts about 18 years of age marking the moment our children have purportedly attained adulthood?
